AVM Mafid entered the BAF on July 27, 1983 (11 GD(P) / 12 BMA Long Course—the first-ever joint commissioning course of the Bangladesh Armed Forces), graduating 1st Position (Senior Most).
His foundational training includes graduating from two prestigious Air Force Academies (Bangladesh and Indonesia) and completing the Air Force Command and Staff College (SESKOAU) in Indonesia. He later completed the Armed Forces War Course (AFWC) from the National Defence College, Bangladesh, and the National War Course from the USA, building a robust framework for high-level defense management and nation-building.
From June 2019 until June 2024, AVM Mafid served as the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), distinguishing himself as the longest-serving Chairman in the regulator’s history. Inheriting an agency facing complex regulatory hurdles, he completely modernized the institution, tripling CAAB's revenue in just four years while aggressively implementing anti-corruption protocols to elevate Bangladesh's global standing

Joined BAF as part of the first-ever joint commissioning course of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. Graduated at the absolute apex of his class, securing the 1st Position (Senior Most).
Commissioned as a pilot officer on June 30, 1985. Established himself as an elite operational fighter pilot, eventually becoming the first BAF officer to achieve the Fighter Operational Category "A" status.
Completed basic and advanced flying training at the Indonesian Air Force Academy, gaining essential piloting skills in military aviation.
Completed fighter conversion training in China, mastering advanced fighter aircraft operation.
Completed the advanced language and command staff college course in Indonesia, enhancing military planning and staff operations.
Completed specialized training on military and peacekeeping operations in accordance with the rule of law in the USA.
Completed fighter instructor course in Saudi Arabia, training new fighter pilots for advanced operations.

Retired from BAF and CAAB. Appointed to the Board of Directors of Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Bangladesh Services Limited (Inter-Continental Hotel) to guide fleet expansions and corporate strategies.
AVM Mafid transformed the local Civil Aviation Training Centre into the advanced Bangladesh Civil Aviation Academy, earning the ICAO Trainer Plus SILVER status. His groundwork culminated in Bangladesh achieving the ICAO GOLD Category in 2025, enabling the nation to conduct locally certified, ICAO-approved training on a global level.

As Chairman of CAAB (2019–2024), he direct-supervised the USD 2.2 Billion HSIA Terminal 3 mega-project, delivering it on time and within budget. He modernized the nation's airspace via advanced Thales CNS/ATM radar systems, upgraded domestic and international airports nationwide, and tripled CAAB's revenue.
First pilot commissioned in Bangladesh to achieve Fighter Operational Category "A" status. Graduating 1st Position in the historic 11 GD(P) course, he logged ~3,000 flight hours (MiG-29, Su-30, F-18, JF-17) and commanded BAF Base Kurmitola and BAF Base Zahurul Haque, leading Victory Day fly-pasts in 2016 and 2017.
Served as a UN Blue Beret Contingent Commander and Peacekeeper in the DRC and North Macedonia, establishing operational aviation safety standards in conflict zones. As Asia-Pacific CAPSCA Chair (2019–2023), he coordinated pandemic border protocols, receiving formal commendations from ICAO.
Demonstrated outstanding tactical calmness under high-stress conditions, successfully negotiating the safe release of all hostages during the 2019 Biman Bangladesh Airlines hijacking. Expertly managed severe inflight military emergencies, emergency landings, and high-level bilateral diplomatic negotiations.
Transformed the Civil Aviation Training Centre into the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Academy with ICAO Trainer Plus SILVER status, paving the way for the prestigious ICAO GOLD Category in 2025. Served on the Senate Committee of the Aviation and Aerospace University and partnered with leading engineering universities.
Following retirement in 2024, transitioned to commercial governance and high-tier consulting. Serves on the Board of Directors of Biman Bangladesh Airlines (fleet expansion & routes) and Bangladesh Services Limited (Inter-Continental Hotel), advising leading private enterprises and policy bodies.

Drawing upon a wide range of exposure in civil aviation and extensive board-level experience—including key tenures with Biman Bangladesh Airlines (where he guided fleet expansion and international route development) and Bangladesh Services Limited (driving business development for the Inter-Continental Hotel)—he provides elite strategic counsel to private enterprises and national entities. He continues to serve as a senior strategic consultant and advisor to leading corporate bodies, specialized organizations, and policy initiatives across the country.
